Why Geno Smith is the Only Option for the Chiefs at #1

The Chiefs don’t have prayer if they don’t improve under center and adding a vertical element to the offense would change everything.

Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn have both struggled mightily throwing the deep ball forcing KC to make a living on the ground and through short passes on the edges and over the middle.

The addition of Smith would immediately open things up for the entire offense. His ability to throw the sideline fade route is second to none in this draft class. If the Chiefs manage to keep Dwayne Bowe and can find another downfield threat to stretch the field through FA or the Draft, the KC offense will be dangerous.

Branden Albert is a Solid Starting Tackle

KC seems to have two options at the top; Geno Smith or Luke Joeckel, the consensus seems to be that new GM John Dorsey will want to play it safe and draft the best player available regardless of position.

The only problem with this approach is that the Chiefs have a damn good player who has developed into one of the best blindside protectors in the entire league. Albert allowed 1 sack all of last season, which is why I find it hard to believe that any other LT would have much of an impact in terms of Wins and Losses.

Drafting a left tackle with the #1 overall pick would be a lateral move for an organization that has a chance to make a giant leap forward in the win column with a solid offseason.

Jamaal Charles is Dangerously Good

Andy Reid loves throwing to his backs and what better way for a young QB to get some early wins that throwing a 3 yard swing pass and watching Charles take it to the house? Smith would enter a situation in KC where he wouldn’t be counted on to win games by himself but simply open up things more for one of the league’s best rushing attacks.

He’s the Best QB in the Draft

No, he’s not Andrew Luck or RG3, but who is??? The enormous success of the rookie quarterbacks last season has raised the bar for what we expect from a young signal-caller.

Since when did a season 42 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions become subpar?

In any other year, Geno Smith would be hailed as the obvious first overall choice for a team in dire need of a franchise quarterback. He’s every bit the player Alex Smith was coming out of Utah or Jamarcus Russell out of LSU, two players who virtually everyone pegged as worthy of a top 5 pick.

Why It Will Happen

Finding a legitimate starter at the Quarterback position is order number 1 for the new regime at 1 Arrowhead Drive. I believe Geno Smith is the best option, regardless of what the Free Agency class yields. He would join a team with a talented supporting cat and an offense that suits his talents perfectly.

Andy Reid has a successful track record of developing young QB’s and understands what it takes from a coaching and play-calling perspective to hasten the learning curve. Look for Geno to be taken #1 overall providing the Chiefs with the spark they need to compete for the AFC West crown in 2013 and beyond.
